The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the best route on Mount Kilimanjaro — combining the highest summit success rate (90-95% over 8 days) with the most breathtaking scenery on the mountain. Approaching from the remote western side, Lemosho traverses the stunning Shira Plateau, offers panoramic vistas from multiple sides of Kibo, and crosses all 5 ecological zones of Kilimanjaro.
What makes Lemosho the premium choice? Time. Eight days gives your body the acclimatization it needs to succeed. The route includes a perfect "climb high, sleep low" day at Lava Tower (4,630m), a full day on the Shira Plateau, and strategic camps at Moir Hut and Karanga. The result: you arrive at summit night genuinely ready — not exhausted.

6 km, 3-4 hours — Drive 3-4 hours from Moshi to the remote Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro's western side. Enter dense Afromontane rainforest with colobus monkeys, exotic flowers, and bird calls. Short but scenic first trek to Forest Camp.
8 km, 5-6 hours — Emerge from the rainforest onto heather and moorland. Cross Shira Ridge to reach Shira 1 Camp on the vast Shira Plateau — the collapsed third peak of Kilimanjaro. Spectacular first views of Kibo's glaciered summit.
14 km, 5-7 hours — Cross the Shira Plateau — one of the highest plateaus on Earth — in a spectacular hike through moorland meadows. Gentle ascent to Moir Hut, a little-used camp at the base of Lent Hills. Great views of Mount Meru on clear days.
7 km, 4-6 hours — The critical acclimatization day. Climb high to Lava Tower at 4,630m (also called the "Shark's Tooth"), then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,960m. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is the secret to Lemosho's 90%+ success rate.
5 km, 4-5 hours — Scramble the famous Barranco Wall — a non-technical but exhilarating climb with incredible views. Continue through valleys to Karanga Camp. Spectacular sunsets here with views of southern glacial valleys towering 3,000 feet above.
4 km, 3-5 hours — Short trek to Barafu high camp at 4,640m. Lunch at camp, then early dinner and rest before summit night. The desolate alpine desert offers magnificent views of Mawenzi peak. Final gear check.
16 km, 12-15 hours total — Depart Barafu just before midnight for the final summit bid. Ascend through heavy scree to Stella Point (5,685m) for sunrise — the most glorious sunrise of your life. Short final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the roof of Africa. Descend via Mweka trail to Mweka Camp.
10 km descent, 3-4 hours — Final descent through montane forest to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificates — gold for Uhuru Peak, green for Stella Point. Transfer back to Moshi for a hot shower and celebration dinner. You've conquered Africa's highest peak.
